An Old Smelter Town With Older Homes

Murray was settled in 1848 and grew up around the smelters that started running in 1869. It became a city in 1903 and took its name from territorial governor Eli Murray. The smelter stacks came down in 2000, and Intermountain Medical Center sits on that land now.

The typical house in Murray was built around 1976, and many neighborhoods are older than that. Those homes have had several water heaters by now, and each swap leaves its own shortcuts behind.

Murray runs its own water system, mostly from deep wells and springs. Well water hardness swings from one source to the next, and we've seen water up to 25 grains in Murray. That means sediment builds up fast in the bottom of the tank.

Common Water Heater Problems in Murray

Here's what we run into most in Murray homes.

Sediment buildup

Groundwater carries more minerals. The sediment settles in the tank, makes it rumble, and shortens its life.

Smaller tank than you need

Older homes often came with a 30 or 40 gallon tank. If the household has grown, it may be time to size up.

Tight closets and old installs

Water heaters squeezed into closets or under stairs are hard to service and often missing clearances or straps.

Flue and venting issues

Older flue pipes rust out or come loose over the years. Bad venting is a carbon monoxide risk, so we check it every time.

No expansion tank

Older installs often skipped it. If there's a pressure regulator, the tank needs one.

Pilot keeps going out

Usually a thermocouple or a draft problem. We find out which.

Things to Check First

A few quick checks before you call.

  • Is the pilot lit? Look through the little window at the bottom
  • Check that the gas knob isn't turned to Pilot or Vacation
  • Electric tank: check the breaker once, don't keep resetting it
  • Water on the floor? Close the valve on the cold water line
  • Smell gas? Leave the house, then call Enbridge Gas or 911

Murray Water Comes From the Ground

Unlike most of the valley, Murray gets most of its water from its own deep wells and springs. Groundwater picks up minerals on its way through the rock, and the hardness can be very different from one part of town to another.

That's why a yearly flush matters so much here. It's part of our $29 plumbing tune-up. When it's time for a new unit, Enbridge ThermWise pays $300 on a qualifying gas tankless and $100 on an ENERGY STAR gas tank.

Murray Water Heater FAQs

How much does water heater repair cost in Murray?

Our weekday diagnostic is $39 and goes toward the repair. Most repairs run $87 to $450. A gas valve or burner assembly runs $650 to $1,500. You see the price in writing first.

Why does my water heater make a popping noise?

That's sediment in the bottom of the tank. Murray's well water leaves more of it. Flushing helps if it's caught early.

My water heater is in a closet. Can you replace it?

Yes. We do closet and under stair installs all the time. We'll make sure it has the right clearances, venting, and straps.

Should I go bigger when I replace it?

If you run out of hot water often, probably. We'll look at your household and tell you what size makes sense.

Do you work nights and weekends in Murray?

Yes. Nights, weekends, and holidays are $99. Weekdays 9 to 5 it's $39, and that goes toward the repair.
