Two Kinds of West Valley Homes
West Valley City came together in 1980 out of Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield, and Redwood. The east side and the middle of town are mostly brick ramblers from the 60s and 70s. Out west, it's subdivisions from the 90s and 2000s.
That splits our furnace calls in two. In the ramblers, we're working on furnaces that have been replaced a couple of times, hooked to ductwork that was laid out before central air was common. On the west side, it's builder grade furnaces finally wearing out.
We come up I-215 to West Valley every week. It's about 20 minutes from our shop in Sandy, and you pay the same as you would in Sandy.
Furnace Problems We See in West Valley
From 50 year old ramblers to 20 year old two stories, these are the calls that come up again and again.
Old pilot light furnaces
A few ramblers still have a furnace with a standing pilot. When the thermocouple wears out, the pilot won't stay lit. We can fix it, and we'll be honest about how much life it has left.
Small ducts and too few returns
Ductwork in older ramblers was laid out for a smaller furnace and a swamp cooler. Too little return air makes the furnace run hot and shut down.
CO alarm going off
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call Enbridge Gas or 911 first. Once it's safe, we test the furnace and venting to find the source.
Rental furnaces nobody checked
Landlords call us when a tenant has no heat. The cause is usually a filter that hasn't been changed in a year or a part that's been failing for a while.
Squealing or rumbling blower
Belt drive blowers on old furnaces squeal, and worn direct drive motors rumble. Both get worse fast once winter starts.
Builder grade units on the west side
Furnaces from the late 90s and 2000s are hitting 20 to 25 years. Igniters, pressure switches, and inducers are what we replace most.
Do This Before You Call
These quick checks take care of a lot of no-heat calls in West Valley. If none of them work, book us.
- Thermostat is on Heat and turned above the room temperature
- Batteries in the thermostat are good
- The filter isn't caked. On older furnaces it's the first thing we look at.
- On a pilot light furnace, look through the little window to see if the pilot is lit
- Breaker and furnace switch are on
- Smell gas or hear the CO alarm? Get out first, then call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside
That's what we charge to come out and diagnose it, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. If you want us to do the repair, the $39 goes toward the bill.
Nights, weekends, and holidays: $99.

I'm a landlord. Can you fix the furnace at my rental?
Yes. We can work directly with your tenant to get in, and we send you the findings and the price before we do the repair. We'll let you know if anything looks unsafe.
My carbon monoxide alarm went off. What do I do?
Get everyone out of the house and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Don't run the furnace until it's been checked. We can test the furnace, the venting, and the water heater to find where it's coming from.
